Tutorial for Sunburst Flower Blanket

This blanket is based on the Sunburst Granny Square by my crochet idol, Priscilla Hewitt. Color scheme borrowed from SnapDragons blanket – go check out her beautiful blog!

Flowers

First, work rounds 1-3 of her free Sunburst Granny Square pattern at the link above. Make as many circle flowers as you need for your blanket, because the join is continuous and worked all at once. So make those flowers! I’ll wait! 🙂

Here are some of my flowers. I made 70 total for a 7×10 blanket that measured 48×64″ and I used worsted weight yarn with a size K 6.5mm hook.

Joining

The join that I used is my own Gumball Blanket pattern join, the Mini-Twist, re-worked into the Continuous Join as You Go – see YouTube video tutorial by Crochet Cabana. I didn’t take a lot of pictures of the continuous join…

Tutorial: Babouska Rose

I wish I could read charts. Maybe one day soon I will figure them out.

My new love! The Babouska Rose Blanket. I am making this blanket, and have documented some tips for maximized results, so I decided to write some pattern support.

Related Materials:

See my horrible phone screenshot of the motif chart below… I interpreted the little plus sign in the circle as “SC in the back bars of the stitch indicated.” (Notes: Not the stitch *post*, rather just the back bars. Also, I worked a slip stitch instead of an SC to eliminate extra bulk.)

Here is a square from the pattern, with my modifications that I documented below.

***Due to a high number of requests, I have re-organized my entire collection of free patterns! The bad news is, this pattern has been relocated to…

Why I Don’t Diet – An Ode to My Father

This made me cry. Very good post.

More Cabaret

Tiffany Kell headshotMy father died three weeks ago. He was in hospice, with all the pharmacological and technological assistance available to keep him comfortable and pain-free, but it was still, as deaths go, not a good one.

I had flown in hours after I’d heard about his fall. He was in late-stage heart and renal failure, and this fall was the beginning of the end. When I arrived, a nurse popped into the room to check on him. “Are you in pain?” she asked. “Just a little,” my dad said, joking through his wincing.

It didn’t have to end like this.

My father was born larger than life, to a family of larger than life people. DNA sequencing showed we are almost entirely Viking stock, no great surprise given the height and breadth of our bodies.

When my father turned 20, he was over 6’2 and 300lbs. His feats of athleticism echoed…

I’ll Never Buy Granola Again!

I wish my oven worked because I’d make this all the time. I love granola, especially mixed in some yogurt.

Trace in the Kitchen

gb6 That’s right, after making this you shouldn’t buy granola bars ever again either! This is very delicious, so give it a whirl. This was the perfect conclusion to a day that started off oh so dismal. I landed at the dentist office bright and early which is not recommended. I normally come out with flying colors. Well, I guess it had to happen eventually that I get a cavity, and so it has..my first cavity!

I got an annoyingly perky dental hygienist who Jedi mind tricked me with her high-pitched voice simultaneously mocking me. It was at the point when she made me hold a mirror and watch her make my gums bleed out as she taught me how to floss that I’d had it! It’s not that I don’t know how to floss, it’s called lazy lady! After that, I muddled through and was unusually busy at work, typing…
